The Truth about Chiropractors

When it comes to health care professionals, chiropractors are definitely one of the most misunderstood and underestimated types of practitioners. They have fallen victim to a great many skeptics and even worse have been negatively labeled by some. As advances in medical care are made, it seems that there has to be more to treating health issues than simply prescribing medications and performing invasive and sometimes dangerous surgeries. Chiropractors do just that, treating the health of a person from the whole of the structure that sustains them.

As far advanced as society has become it is a pity that so many people rely so heavily on medications to “fix” their problems. The larger picture indicates that there is much more to healthcare than simply popping pills and enduring surgerical cures.

Many people who visit a chiropractor also do not understand the type of treatment that they are getting. Someone who has never seen a chiropractor may be misinformed and relying on false information about the practice. Chiropractors make up the largest arena of drug-free health care. In addition to that they rank third in the list of largest types of healthcare providers in North America.

What is Chiropractic?

The word chiropractic itself is derived from two Greek words. The first word, cheir means hand and the second word praxis meaning done by hand. Essentially chiropractic is a precise alternative medical system that approaches wellness as a whole body experience. A chiropractor can evaluate, diagnose, classify and treat a wide range of medical problems by addressing them at their root cause without risky surgeries or pharmacology.

Essentially, chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the body’s structure – primarily that of the spine – and the body’s function. Doctors of chiropractic use hands-on therapy called manipulation (or adjustment) as their core procedure.

Comparable to an MD?

Contrary to what many people believe a chiropractor endures rigorous and in depth training that compares to that of a medical doctor. A chiropractor must complete three years of pre-chiropractic schooling before they can begin their 4 year study of chiropractic care. The general student in chiropractic classes spends equal amounts studying human physiology as does a medical doctor. The total accumulation of hours necessary to complete a chiropractic degree is 4200 hours. These hours are a combination of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience.

The difference between the education of an MD and that of a chiropractor lies in the fact that an MD trains in pharmacology and surgical procedures and chiropractor trains in the care of the spine.

Worth the Cost?

Many people assume that visiting a chiropractor is not within their budgets. The truth is that often times by seeking chiropractic care for health issues matters are resolved subsequently saving money on prescriptions and time away from work. It is also less expensive in the long run to seek the care of a chiropractor than to resort to costly and invasive surgical procedures. Chiropractic care is proven to slow down the aging process and results in a much higher level of well being and health.

Many people who regularly visit a chiropractor feel that it only adds to their complete wellness routine. Just as they exercise or go to a spa, they continue chiropractic care to keep the body functioning at its’ best. The vast majority of chiropractic patients feel better longer and would not resort back to their life without chiropractic care.

A survey of patients of chiropractors in an independent physicians’ association found that, when asked if they would recommend their Doctor of Chiropractic to others, 95.5% of the patients said “yes.”1

A chiropractor is a health practitioner who treats the whole person. Not only do they help eliminate symptoms they see to it that total wellbeing and health is achieved. For total body health and a complete evaluation, a chiropractor can offer what no other MD can. Chiropractic care should be required for all people wanting to sustain an optimum level of overall wellbeing.
